About the Bayh-Dole Coalition

A Word From Our Executive Director

As you may recall, the theme of the Bayh-Dole Coalition for the year is demonstrating the incredible “Return on Investment” of the Bayh-Dole Act, both economically and in terms of improving public well-being, both here and around the world. Along that line, we will soon unveil the first comprehensive study of what the law contributes to the U.S. economy. From the preliminary results, the numbers will be truly impressive.

And on June 3, we will induct our next American Innovator Award recipients at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. This year’s winners are truly inspiring. Their stories demonstrate that it takes a lot of inspiration, dedication, perseverance — and private sector risk — to turn a federally-funded invention into a useful product.

I know that you are constantly being asked to support many worthy causes. The Bayh-Dole Coalition is doing groundbreaking work, which is essential for protecting and preserving one of the greatest innovation systems in human history — and which is constantly under attack. I can assure you that every dollar we receive is put to good use. We can only continue this important effort with your support, so please give whatever you can. Thank you.

Our March member spotlight is COGR! Founded in 1948, COGR is the national authority on federal policies and regulations affecting U.S. research institutions, representing more than 230 universities, affiliated medical centers, and independent research institutions. Through engagement with its members, federal agencies, and policymakers, COGR works to advance effective research policies that maximize the impact of taxpayer-funded research and strengthen the innovation ecosystem enabled by Bayh-Dole. The Coalition is proud to count COGR as a committed member.

“The Bayh-Dole Act has built one of the most effective innovation systems in the world — enabling research institutions to translate federally funded discoveries into new products and companies. Having spent more than two decades working in university technology transfer and research administration, I’ve seen how critical this framework is to moving ideas from the lab to the marketplace through strong public-private partnerships. Policymakers must continue to protect Bayh-Dole and bolster innovation to ensure federally funded inventions reach taxpayers and drive economic growth.” — Kevin Wozniak, Director of Research Security & Intellectual Property, COGR
