Bayh-Dole Coalition Celebrates Musical Innovation on World IP Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 25, 2025) — Executive Director of the Bayh-Dole Coalition Joseph P. Allen released the following statement to commemorate World Intellectual Property Day:

“The 25th annual World Intellectual Property Day is a time to celebrate the critical role that intellectual property rights play in fostering creativity, innovation, and economic growth.

“This year’s theme, ‘IP and Music,’ highlights how IP rights fuel the creative economy by protecting the work of artists and composers — as well as the technological innovators backstage who enable the biggest stars to strike a chord with their fans.

“The Bayh-Dole Act of 1980 — which empowered universities, nonprofits, and startups to retain the patent rights on their federally-funded discoveries and license them to private firms for commercialization — has boosted the music industry by fostering breakthroughs ranging from advanced audio tech and AI tools to digital sound classification systems. Across all industries, the Bayh-Dole system has generated over 554,000 invention disclosures and 6.5 million jobs over the past four decades.

“Strong IP rights don’t just support scientific progress; they empower artists, inventors, and creators of all kinds. On this World IP Day, we honor the policies that make the modern music industry possible — and commit to safeguard them for the next generation.”

The Bayh-Dole Coalition is a group of organizations and individuals committed to protecting the Bayh-Dole Act, as well as informing policymakers and the public of its many benefits.
