Welcome to the Bayh-Dole Bulletin, a monthly newsletter from the Bayh-Dole Coalition. About the Bayh-Dole Coalition

A Word From Our Executive Director

At long last, Election Day has come and gone. The results made it crystal clear that growing the economy and increasing opportunities for our workforce to grow is Issue #1. That gives us a unique opening to explain to the new Administration and Congress the critical role our Bayh-Dole innovation system plays in our domestic success and in confronting the challenge posed by rivals like China. We are already moving to take advantage of this opening. Our webinar on December 6, “Unleashing America’s Entrepreneurs: The Bayh-Dole Formula for Economic Prosperity,” is part of that campaign. Hope you can join us then!

Member Spotlight

Our November member spotlight is the University of Maryland and its tech transfer office, UM Ventures. Since its inception, UM Ventures has launched over 160 startups and disclosed 5,500 inventions through the tech transfer system. The Bayh-Dole Coalition is fortunate to have UMD and UM Ventures as members and advocates of the Bayh-Dole Act.

“As The Economist has noted, the Bayh-Dole Act is ‘possibly the most inspired piece of legislation to be enacted in America over the past half-century.’ A prime example of academic research translation and a technology of the future, which is rapidly approaching, is the quantum computing industry. Anchored by academic research conducted at the University of Maryland, College Park is home to about one-fifth of the world’s quantum computing capacity. The Bayh-Dole Act, which enabled economic growth around the country, from biotech hubs like Boston and San Diego to software meccas like Seattle and Silicon Valley, is now catalyzing the new ‘Capital of Quantum’ in College Park. UMD is a proud member of the Bayh-Dole Coalition, and we offer much gratitude for the Coalition’s unwavering support of the Bayh-Dole Act.” — Ken Porter, Director, UM Ventures – College Park
