Bayh-Dole Bulletin: Edition 3

Welcome to the Bayh-Dole Bulletin, a monthly newsletter from the Bayh-Dole Coalition. The Bayh-Dole Coalition is a diverse group of innovation-oriented organizations and individuals committed to celebrating and protecting the Bayh-Dole Act, as well as informing policymakers and the public of its many benefits.

About the Bayh-Dole Coalition

A Word From Our Executive Director

Even as Congress winds down and the election heats up, the threats to the Bayh-Dole Act have only increased. We just commented on the proposed NIH intramural licensing guidelines which are particularly troubling given the Administration’s pending march in guidelines. Both actions raise fundamental questions about whether the government can be trusted as a R&D partner. Once again, the Bayh-Dole Coalition addressed the relevant issues directly, underscoring the potential impact of weakening the law at this critical time in our history.

We will discuss these and other issues at our upcoming “Faces of American Innovation” event in Washington, DC on September 18-19, 2024. This year we’ve added a town hall event so our members will be active participants discussing pending threats and opportunities and how to position ourselves for greater success after the election. We’ll also be visiting with key Congressional decision makers during our time in Washington. I hope you can join us. Your support and participation has never been more needed than right now.

Member Spotlight

Our July member spotlight is the Association of American Universities (AAU)! The AAU comprises 71 leading research universities across North America and represents nearly 850,000 employees. The Bayh-Dole Coalition was fortunate enough to have Kate Hudson, AAU’s associate vice president and counsel for government relations and public policy, as a panelist at our Congressional Briefing on the Bayh-Dole Act and March-in Rights in January.

“Every day, AAU’s members use federal funding to discover and license new inventions that address our world’s greatest challenges, improve public health and safety, and spur millions of dollars in economic activity. None of this would be possible without the Bayh-Dole Act. At a time when American universities are under considerable attack on a myriad of non-traditional bases, AAU is proud to work alongside the Bayh-Dole Coalition to ensure that these institutions can continue to innovate for decades to come.” – Kate Hudson, Associate Vice President and Counsel for Government Relations and Public Policy, AAU
