Bayh-Dole Bulletin: Edition 2

Welcome to the Bayh-Dole Bulletin, a monthly newsletter from the Bayh-Dole Coalition. The Bayh-Dole Coalition is a diverse group of innovation-oriented organizations and individuals committed to celebrating and protecting the Bayh-Dole Act, as well as informing policymakers and the public of its many benefits.

About the Bayh-Dole Coalition

A Word From Our Executive Director

The Bayh-Dole Coalition has been working hard to defend the law from attacks, including one on Senators Bayh and Dole, which we answered in a letter to the editor in The Washington Post.

The Coalition will host the second-annual Faces of American Innovation event in Washington, D.C. on September 18-19. We will celebrate five extraordinary people whose incredible discoveries and achievements illustrate the impact of the Bayh-Dole Act. It includes a town hall meeting with our members to discuss the issues and opportunities facing us. And we’ll host an event on Capitol Hill to meet policymakers and their staffs. I hope you can join us. We’ve come a long way, but now’s the time to redouble our efforts.

June Coalition Highlights

  • Webinar: Decentralization = Innovation: The Case Against Reinstating Government Management of Federally-Funded Tech (6/27)
  • Article: Knoxville News-Sentinel, “This law made ORNL a commercial powerhouse. A federal agency could jeopardize it” (6/20)
  • Op-ed: Steven Infanti, The Patriot-News, “Federal policy changes would hamstring Pennsylvania’s economy and hurt patients” (6/12)
  • Letter to the Editor: The Washington Post, “A debate over a federal bill that has played a key role in medical innovation” (6/4)

Upcoming Events & Coalition Priorities

On September 18-19, the Coalition will host our first-ever Advocacy Conference and our second annual American Innovator Awards in Washington, D.C., where we’ll honor the five inspiring individuals profiled in our soon-to-be-released 2024 Faces of American Innovation report.

The Advocacy Conference and Awards Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, September 18 and will be a members-only event. On September 19, we will host a briefing with our awardees on Capitol Hill, which will be open to anyone who wants to attend. If you’re interested in attending our 9/19 Capitol Hill briefing, please RSVP here.

Member Spotlight

Our June member spotlight is the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM)! The NAM is the largest manufacturing trade association in the United States, representing 14,000 manufacturers across the country—and the 13 million people who make things in America. The Bayh-Dole Coalition was fortunate to have Charles Crain, the NAM’s vice president of domestic policy, as a panelist at our Congressional Briefing on the Bayh-Dole Act and March-in Rights in January. The NAM also recently co-hosted an event with Axios to highlight the dangers of the NIST march-in proposal.

“Innovators across the manufacturing industry are at the forefront of developing life-changing technologies, from clean energy solutions to next-generation semiconductors to life-saving medicines. The Bayh-Dole Act has played a critical role in fostering manufacturing innovation, and the NAM is proud to support the work of the Bayh-Dole Coalition. Manufacturers of all sizes stand united in support of the promise of Bayh-Dole—and against any efforts, including extra-statutory and damaging proposals to expand march-in rights, that would undermine the Act and America’s innovation economy.” – Charles Crain, Vice President of Domestic Policy, NAM
